Surface Preparation

Internal mold releases in the pultrusion process rise to the surface during cure and form a smooth, somewhat non-stick film on the finished product. This residue must be removed prior to any painting or adhesive applications. Solvent wiping is a simple method sufficient for painting. However, sanding or sandblasting are much more desirable methods when bonding is involved. On-line sanding methods have been successfully developed for some custom products and can be quoted upon request. Secondary sanding methods that are more readily available include a brush sander with 2"x48" envelope and a small blast cabinet for parts with minimal surface area. Spot sanding can also be accommodated for intermittent bond areas. Plans are currently under way for equipment upgrades, upon which new capabilities will be published at the time of installation.
