FRP Composites For The Construction Market

Construction Market

Bridge Deck
A modular fiber reinforced polymer bridge deck was constructed in West Virginia, demonstrating the use of composite materials for highway bridge construction. The composite bridge deck cross-section was designed using full-depth hexagons and half-depth trapezoids manufactured from the pultrusion process. High-performance characteristics make FRP the ideal material for bridge deck construction.

Vehicular Bridge
This fiber reinforced polymer vehicular bridge has been installed and load rated for 15,000 lbs. at the Philadelphia Zoo, Philadelphia, PA. The bridge was designed in modular parts to span 10, 20, 30 and 40 ft. over moated areas at the zoo, providing access for earth moving equipment.

Cooling Towers
The Northwind/Unicom Cooling Tower project was part of a new Central Energy Plant located in downtown Chicago. These towers, by evaporative heat and mass transfer cooling, provide cold water to an ice storage system. Eleven structural components were produced in four unique, pultruded, customer-specified colors which blend with those of the building superstructure below

Buildings
The West Virginia Department of Transportation uses a multi-cellular fiber reinforced polymer building (approx. 40' x 21' x 14') to store signs, chemicals and snow removal equipment. The walls were constructed with pultruded wide flange beams, using bi-directional fabric mats for higher strength and stiffness.

Pedestrian Bridges
Fiber-reinforced polymer components are ideal for use in pedestrian bridges, especially in areas where the surroundings cannot be disturbed. Pedestrian bridges as long as 80 feet have replaced steel and wooden bridges. High-strength components are lightweight and can be carried to the site, eliminating the need for heavy installation equipment. Corrosion resistant, low maintenance, and inherent color characteristics make FRP the choice material for pedestrian bridges.
